“Stay on target. We’re too close. Stay on target.”
“Stay on target. We’re too close. Stay on target.”
- Gold Five, Star Wars
I’ve crossed the 40K word mark today. I should finish NaNoWriMo 2020 around Wednesday. I’ll also be halfway through the story. This year feels strange because I’ve planned a 100K novel instead of the NaNoWriMo 50K. I feel I should finish my novel instead of only being halfway done.

My story has grown complex, and as a result more interesting. My protagonist has run into problem after problem, clue after clue, and even solved one or two along the way. My antagonist has, so far, taken only a peripheral role. He discloses his goal in the next 10K words. The last half of the book will be about my protagonist working to stop him.
The first half of the book (which I’m closing out now) reads like a mystery. It’s twisty-turny with a lot of seeded clues, some red-herrings, and a few WTF moments. The second half will be more of an action/adventure/suspense novel.
The main issues I’m seeing at this stage are:
Continuity. I’m not keeping track of who does what or says what. Too much exposition. I’m writing in 1st person and my principal character thinks too much. My ever-present problem of maintaining a consistent tense. My antagonist’s name needs to change. He has the perfect name, but I want to avoid issues. I’ll leave it at that. My protagonist is in a deep hole, and I’m not sure how he’ll dig himself out. My 99 scene breakdown went out the window around scene 5. My protagonist, occasionally, seems out of character.
I’m having fun writing this book more than I thought I would. It’s gone to a place I hadn’t envisioned, and that’s always interesting to me as a writer. But, I because I don’t know where the story will take me, I don’t know what I’m going to write. This is like starting a fresh novel. It’s scary because you don’t know what to write. It’s when writer’s block can set in. My advice then is to write whatever flows out of your mind and hands.
It’s better to write something, anything, than to sit around worrying about what to write.
That’s it for now. I’ll update again once I hit 50K.
Word up!
